Auch eine konkrete Trennung zwischen öffentlichen und privaten Räumen findet erst in dieser Zeit statt. So werden den Gemächern differenzierte Funktionen zugewiesen. Eine Anwendung dieser Vorstellung auf ein antikes Wohnhaus ist nicht möglich und spiegelt diese Gegebenheiten nur unzureichend wieder.
Anhand der Wanddekoration der einzelnen Räume und Ihrer qualitativen Gestaltung wird ersichtlich, welche Bedeutung diesen Gemächern beigemessen wurde. In detektivischer Kleinarbeit wird erst deutlich, welche Räume der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich und welche Privatgemächer waren.
Leider ist die ursprüngliche Dekoration der Mysterienvilla nur zum Teil bekannt. Einige Wandmalereien sind durch Neue ersetzt worden oder es wurden nicht alle Wände des 2. Stils in der Literatur berücksichtigt. Die Cubicula 19 bis 21 weisen laut Beyen hauptsächlich konservative Malereien vor und zählen zu den unbedeutenen und schlecht erhaltenen Zimmern.
